Creating a world of difference for cancer patients – Carol Lai’s story

Thanks to the generosity of Carol Lai, a state-of-the-art, high resolution equipment suite for endoscopy is now up and running at BC Cancer – Vancouver. A first of its kind in Canada, the Fujifilm endoscopy unit is an integral tool used in analyzing cancers like lung and colorectal, where doctors must look inside a patient’s body to gain a better understanding of the disease. The tool’s technology allows for extreme precision during sampling that will benefit over 300 cancer patients per year.

Having experienced cancer through personal and family diagnoses, Carol felt compelled to fund the entire suite to benefit present and future cancer patients, and to honour the teams at BC Cancer who treated her.

Carol shared, “I believe that if you have the ability to give, it’s important to give back to the community through an organization like BC Cancer. To know that BC Cancer can offer the best care possible to British Columbians with the most advanced tools and equipment—I am truly content.”

Carol passed away on August 2, 2019, but her legacy of generosity and community giving will live on. Carol and her donation were honoured at the 2019 Hope Couture that raised over $700,000 to help launch the pancreatic cancer rapid access clinic at BC Cancer – Vancouver.
